Christian Kroll is the founder and CEO of Ecosia, a search engine that uses the revenue from their advertisements in a unique and special way: planting trees. Ecosia has planted over 100 million trees with the help of its 15 million users in biodiversity hotspots all over the world. Ecosia also sets new standards when it comes to start-up exits: Christian Kroll decided that it would be better to give up all of his shares of the company to a charity and therefore Ecosia cannot be acquired from a third-party investor.
Before Christian started Ecosia he got a bachelor’s degree from the Friedrich-Alexander-University of Erlangen-Nürnberg and travelled the world. He had the idea of Ecosia while living in Nepal and South America, where he could see the social and economic inequalities first-hand and learned more about deforestation. Kroll was unsatisfied with the status quo of how search engines were used so far and decided that he wanted to build a sustainable alternative.
