Professor Markus Roth is a distinguished physics professor at the Institut für Kernphysik, TU-Darmstadt, where he leads a research group that is also associated with the German National Laboratory “Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung” (GSI). His expertise lies in the field of inertial confinement fusion (ICF), fast ignition, and research in novel ion acceleration concepts using ultra-intense lasers and their applications. This interdisciplinary field combines nuclear physics, materials science, plasma physics, and high-power lasers. In 2021, he became one of the founders and Chief Science Officer of Focused Energy, which aims to enable secure, clean energy production from fusion, based on laser-driven plasma implosions. Focused Energy specializes in developing power plants based on the technique of inertial fusion, which has been widely studied by the world-wide plasma physics community for many years.
